Hornets will host five events to encourage New Orleans community to live a healthy and active lifestyle
January 20, 2012
The New Orleans Hornets will hold five events next week as a part of the NBA’s Live Healthy Week, which runs from Wednesday, Jan. 25 to Thursday, Feb. 2. The events will include Bee-Fit Field Days presented by Ocshner & Blue Cross Blue Shield, S.O.S. Midnight Basketball, a court dedication, season ticket holder boot camp led by Hornets Director of Athletic Development Carlos Daniel, as well as a staff volunteer project with Youth Run NOLA.
“We’re excited to have so many events scheduled in the New Orleans community during NBA Live Healthy Week,” said Hornets President Hugh Weber. “One of our main objectives as an organization is to be an advocate of living long and healthy lives and executing initiatives that ensure New Orleans families are eating healthy and are physically fit.”
The Hornets will kick off the week with a court dedication at St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church. The Hornets have partnered with the Salvation Army to refurbish several courts in the New Orleans area to encourage neighborhood kids to live active and healthy lifestyles.
On Saturday, Jan. 30, the Hornets staff and season ticket holders will spend time running with local youth as they train to run a 10k race as a part of Youth Run NOLA. Youth Run NOLA is an after-school program for middle and high school students designed to use running as a medium to inspire and prepare students for success in all aspects of their lives.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the Hornets launched SOS NOLA Midnight Basketball on Jan. 14 as an initiative of the Mayor’s SOS NOLA: Saving Our Sons campaign. Midnight Basketball drew 17 teams and over 100 participants in its first evening and the second night of the program, which goes through mid-March, will take place at 8:00 p.m. on Jan. 28.
The Hornets have teamed up with Ochsner and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana to teach physical fitness, prevent childhood obesity and educate students on the importance of healthy lifestyle habits through the “Bee-Fit” program. For the second-straight year, the program will reach all 56 elementary schools in Jefferson Parish and more than 31,000 students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The Hornets will host one of the spring sessions on Jan. 30 at Woodland West Elementary.
To wrap up Live Healthy Week, the Hornets will host a season ticket holder boot camp at the team’s practice facility, the Alario Center. The session will be led by Hornets Director of Athletic Development, Carlos Daniel, as season ticket holders will get the experience of a workout inspired by those completed by Hornets players. Season ticket holders will also have the opportunity to get a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the Hornets practice facility, including the locker room and training/weightlifting areas.
NBA/WNBA FIT is the league's comprehensive health and wellness program that encourages physical activity and healthy living for children and families through programs, events, and products year-round.
